Winter’s attack has dispatched human inhabitants to warmer quarters, leaving the field to more hearty creatures. The deer are now in charge, free to roam in search of browse. Although winter still reigns, the sun has melted away patches of snow on the exposed south slope, awakening small areas of grass.
